General morphology: Robust, 60-122 cm tall, with smooth leaf sheaths 10-50 cm long and 7-25 mm wide. Green with light to dark purple pigmentation in some parts. Compact, brown to purple inflorescence, 12-15 cm long, with 5–15 racemes, 0.5-3 cm long. Spikelets are dense, branched, 3-4 mm long, shortly cuspidate, and rarely awned
